The monarchy mystery – An interview with the Dutch people. Dutch. Het mysterie monarchie – Een interview met het Nederlandse volk (Amsterdam: Boom, 254 p., with lit. Illustrated with specially produced children’s drawings. ISBN 90 5352 905 5).

Research about the contradictory feelings of people about the royal family and its rule (see Michael Billig’s earlier British project Talking of the royal family). Based on long qualitative interviews with fifty citizens, carefully distributed over various demographic categories - so as to be more or less representative. Chapters, with analyses and fragments, focus on feelings around: doubt, familiarity, musings, identification, pride, joy, seriousness, power, jealousy, consolation, outrage, disgust, competition, curiosity, compassion, hope and patriotism.

The conclusion wonders whether the impending accession of William Alexander, after more than a century of women on the throne, may change sentiments. The study received a grant from the Foundation for Special Projects in Journalism FBJP.
